Just thinking out loud.

Friday, January 16th, 2009

The news does not get any better on the economy and I am really worried for my children. They have jobs and are working full time and just about making it. It’s hard to imagine what the prople who are laid off or out of work are doing to survive. I know that I have scaled down my expenditures significantly and I am relatively well off compared to others. Of course I worked for 30 odd years. I kind of smirked when I read this past week that Tiffany’s sales are down. I guess the rich are scaling back too. I do know my homes value dropped about $50,000 and it is in avery desirable community. I guess the only good thing this past week was the Eagles making it to the NFC Championship game. If you asked me a month or so ago that they could go to the Super Bowl I would have told you to get off the stuff. You never know what life brings. Have a great day.

Just thinking about the times

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Just thinking about the times. As a senior (age) I have lots of years of experience with hard times. Believe it or not when I got maried nearly 50 years ago, I had a $20 bill in my pocket which was all the money I had. I owed my mother $300 which I had borrowed to help pay for my wedding, which I hoped to return from my new wife and my wedding presents. My honeymoon was a day at the shore in Atlantic City, because I had to be at work on Monday or I would loose my summer job which I could not afford to do. We had no place to live because I was going to college, so we lived with my in-laws four nearly 4 years. I worked every weekend so I could contribute to the household expenses because my wife’s family was essentialy poor. My wife sold her wedding ring when I finished college, so we would have enough money to go to Michigan where I was going for post graduate work in my field. I was going to get a stipend so we would have, at least, enough money to live on with our one year old son. Do you think this Depression can get me down? NO WAY. If we could survive those times when there was NO Depression in the country, just hard times that everyone was working through, we certainly could survive today. My wife and I were very typical of people in that era. They endured the same way we did and made it through to have successful lives. I do feel badly for my children and grand children who are now suffering but I truly believe they will also make it. Thanks for listening to my tale of woe and try to have a good day.
